Celebration coming to Atherton

Celebration coming to Atherton!

We are pleased to report that the Atherton City Council has approved relocating Norman Gardner’s monumental scultpure, Celebration, to the new town center, with a specific location to be determined in the coming days. Below is a mock-up of a likely site for Celebration

The Atherton council loves the sculpture

During its July 17th council meeting, the council considered the terms of a loan proposed by the Gardner family, which included having the town fund the costs of moving the sculpture, constructing a base for it and installing it. Members of the council spoke very admiringly of the sculpture and believe that it will be a wonderful addition to the open space gardens and walkways of the new town center.

The town will coordinate with the Gardner family to select the final location, design the base and install a plaque with information about the sculpture and its loan to the town. Work will proceed in July to get the move underway. We will provide a further update on the progress, when there is more to report. You can view the proceedings of the council’s consideration and discussion about the sculpture on Youtube here.

Following the council meeting, a local reporter, Eleanor Raab, published an article called “New sculpture donated to Atherton’s town center,” in the Almanac about the council’s decision to site Celebration in the new town center. Click here to read that in the Almanac.
